M GROUP INTERNATIONAL / THE DESTINATION EDIT

Switzerland

Room to see things differently.

A lakeside home, a city base or a mountain retreat. Switzerland rewards a precise brief: the landscape may draw you in, but the location and ownership framework shape the decision.

THE M GROUP PERSPECTIVE

Begin with the life.
Then find the home.

Begin with two questions in parallel: where would you like to spend time, and what can you purchase in your circumstances? The answer depends on more than the home itself. Establish the ownership position early, then compare the daily experience of city, lake and mountain settings.

PLACES TO EXPLORE

Find your setting.

01 / Geneva & the lake

A waterside perspective

A Geneva-area search can extend from an urban apartment to a home in a lakeside commune. Our selected Anières property is presented with private lake access. For a specific home, ask exactly which access rights, maintenance responsibilities and boundaries form part of the sale.

02 / Montreux & the Riviera

A setting between lake and mountains

Montreux sits on Lake Geneva with the Alps behind it and Lavaux vineyards nearby. For buyers, the practical comparison is between a town-connected address and a more elevated, private setting. Consider the route back home as carefully as the panorama from it.

03 / The Alps & Gstaad

A retreat built around the seasons

A mountain property asks a different set of questions from a city home. Think about arrival in winter, the care of an empty house and how often you would use it beyond ski season. Confirm eligibility for the specific purchase before developing a shortlist too far.

LIFE IN SWITZERLAND

The everyday matters.

Quality of life

Landscape within the daily brief

Decide how much of your week should revolve around the outdoors and how much around a city. An attractive view is a starting point; everyday access, local services and the way the home works in poor weather complete the picture.

Food & culture

Explore beyond the postcard

Use visits to discover the neighbourhood’s restaurants, shops and cultural life as well as its scenery. A lake town and an Alpine village offer different settings for gathering with friends. Look for a place you want to return to across the seasons.

Seasonality

Plan for the quieter months

Budget time and resources for property care while you are absent. For a mountain home, ask about winter access and maintenance responsibilities. For an apartment, understand the shared building’s planned works and services before comparing headline prices.

THE INFORMED BUYER

A considered
next step.

Ownership, residence and the realities of looking after a home.

Ownership & eligibility

Swiss rules commonly known as Lex Koller regulate acquisitions by foreign non-residents. The competent cantonal authority determines whether a particular transaction needs authorisation. Nationality, residence, property and intended use all belong in the initial review.

Residence & taxation

The Federal Office of Justice states that owning Swiss property does not create an entitlement to a residence permit. Keep immigration and acquisition advice separate. Ask a qualified adviser for the taxes and annual costs applicable to the canton, municipality and your personal situation.

Policy & local context

Check the current law with the responsible authority rather than treating a proposed policy change as an enacted rule. For your selected property, request confirmation of the permitted use and any ownership conditions before making an unconditional commitment.

Editorial guidance reviewed September 25, 2026. Tax, residence and ownership requirements depend on individual circumstances. Confirm the current position with qualified local advisers before committing.
